Having worked with the public
for many years within the retail trade, for a family business originally
established in the 1940s, brothers Mitchell and Jeremy Brent both developed
excellent communication skills. Whilst Mitchell Brent's speciality was
business administration, Jeremy Brent was educated and experienced in the
areas of marketing and design. Consequently, they decided to combine their
skills, diversify into printing and publishing, and in 1989, Calco
Publications was established.
A local hospital subsequently
contacted the newly formed company to re-design and print its appointment
cards, which had not changed for many years. Calco proposed that local
businesses might be approached and sponsor the full design and production
costs, thereby enabling the hospital to receive their cards free of charge.
The proposal was promptly accepted and the rest is history.
At that time, many
appointment cards issued were mundane and uninteresting, usually printed in
black on white card. Whilst the information appearing on them
was invariably important, the reproduction was often unclear and sometimes
difficult for patients to read and understand.
However, by utilising professional
design and typesetting, along with the
latest computer and print technology, Calco Publications proceeded to
redefine the 'humble' appointment card and introduced Full Colour. In
doing so, separate departments and sites could then be featured clearly on
the same appointment card, accompanied by legible and informative text. The
skills of our designers and typesetters now extends to a wide range of other
products, all of which may be viewed on this website.
Calco Publications is now
by far the largest producer of sponsored patient literature in the UK and
currently supplies more than 270 hospitals nationwide with a wide range of
products, including approximately 10 million appointment cards per annum.
